The discomfort and disbe- lief in the eyes of the “black ambassador” reflected the feelings of the subjects covered in the story. This is why we chose Michael Roy’s illustration as Cover Image of the Year. The emotion of the story was truly reflected in the col- orful and eye-catching images, which add an additional dimension to the critique. For what was a challenging story to tell, Michael Roy’s works perfectly encapsulated its ideas in artistic form. NOMINEES: “Tracing an unknown past” by Pat Volz (September); “Korea’s media malaise” by Rob Green and Sergio Mateos (November) Photo of the Year WINNER: “An oasis out of the ashes” by Douglas MacDonald (August) Douglas MacDonald’s scenic photographs beautifully capture the spirit of Jeju, with candid shots of islanders going about their daily lives, reflecting the many sides of the island. These photos highlighted the mix of the tra- ditional and modern aspects of the island, from haenyeo (Jeju’s women divers) collecting shellfish to children playing in the ocean.
